Carolyn Ann LaMar Barker

Carolyn Ann LaMar Barker, 61, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at an Abilene, Texas medical center after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Buffalo Gap, Texas, with Graham Gutting officiating. A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Megargel Cemetery near Olney, TX, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South.

She was born to Goldia Mae (Martin) and James A. LaMar on January 31, 1943, in Megargel, Texas, where she graduated from high school. She attended Draughon's Business School in Wichita Falls. Mrs. Barker retired from the State of Texas after 25 years, having worked with the Department of Human Services in Abilene as an administrative assistant, and at the Wichita Falls State Hospital as a file clerk. She moved to Abilene from Wichita Falls in 1976.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Buffalo Gap, Texas, and the Abilene Quilters Guild.

She married Glen Barker in Megargel on August 11, 1962. Mrs. Barker loved her children and grandchildren, and loved to travel. She was a mother and grandmother figure to many outside her family, and was known as "Grammy". She was loved by all.

She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Joyce Knabel; and a niece, Caron Boen.

Survivors include her husband, Glen Barker of Tuscola; son, Duane "Stewart" Barker and wife, Carolyn, of Atlanta, GA, and their children, Erica and Hannah Grace Barker; a daughter, Becky Estrella and husband, John A., of Tuscola, and their children, Amanda and Zane Estrella; a brother, Paul LaMar and wife, Jean, of Nocona, TX; and sisters, Betty Ward and husband, Bill, of Olney, and Patty Dukes and husband, Hilton, of Tyler. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Clem Barker and Edith Lavon Foster and husband, Bobby, all of Bowie; a brother-in-law, Clarence Barker of Graham, TX; several nieces and nephews, and many family friends.

Pallbearers will be Darryl Betts, Keith Betts, Kyle LaMar, Jim LaMar, David Barker, Jim Knabel, Mike Ward, and Roger Ward.
