Her family was closely associated with the University of Georgia. Sarah Spalding Cobb Baxter, the widow of Richard Bolling Baxter, Jr. of Athens, Georgia and Mrs. Cobb's granddaughter, was secretary to UGA Chancellor David Crenshaw Barrow, Jr., a first cousin to Mrs. Baxter's mother.
