Frances Violet LaRance, "Baawaalaatbaakoosh" 82, of Wyola, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, while a resident at the Awe Kualawaache Care Center.

Sis, as she was affectionately called, was born Sept. 20, 1930, a child of Andrew LaRance and Agnes Cummins. Her grandparents Richard and Delia Houle Cummins raised her in traditional Crow style, while residing in the Grey Blanket area. She received her education locally and later attended Sheridan College, concentrating on a degree in counseling.

She was a member of the Catholic Church, Whistling Water Clan and was a child of the Whistling Water. She worked at the Thunder Child Treatment Center in Sheridan, Wyoming. She supported her son with the numerous Sun Dance ceremonies. She enjoyed the Sweat Lodge Ceremony and prayer meetings. Sis cherished the time she could spend with her children and grandchildren.

Her parents; adopted father Roy McComas; sister Anna Bear Cloud; brother James LaRance; and grandchildren, Lynette Shane, Melvin Pretty Weasel, Roy, Arnold and James Bird in Ground preceded Frances in death.

Survivors include her son Dillard Bird in Ground Sr.; sisters Dorothy Aragon, Jean St. Germaine, Marjorie Morrison and Arleta Young; brothers Albert and Christopher LaRance, Harold Brien and Ronald Eastman; her adopted daughters Toni Aragon Cuny, Kathy (Gilbert) Bird in Ground and Beldean LaForge; children whom she raised as her own, Bronson and Johnny Bird in Ground; her beloved grandchildren Dillard Jr., Patrick, Michael, Shan, Michelle, Frances and Trina; as well as her extended family including the Cummins, LaRance, Brien, Eastman, Fritzler, Peppers, Hill and Aragon families.

Rosary will be recited 3 p.m. Monday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, in the Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church.

Interment will follow in the Cummins Family Cemetery.
