Lester Nelson Lee was born in McGill in central Nevada to Annie Eliza Keele and John Raymond Lee in 1911. He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater of World War II. During the Battle of Savo Island near the Solomon Islands, his ship, USS Astoria, suffered heavy casualties and damage. On August 9, 1942, around noon, the ship sank quickly with over 200 men still aboard, including Seaman Lee. His name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Manila, Philippines.
