TORRINGTON — Viva M. Bartley of Torrington died peacefully at the home of her daughter on March 29, 2014, after a courageous battle with ALS.

She was born Dec. 3, 1922, to Alexander and Mertie Waldron Lejeune. She led a long, full and happy life in the Torrington area. Among her accomplishments were being a member of the First Congregational Church of West Torrington for 75 years, volunteering, quilting, baking pies and all other fund raising projects. She also enjoyed playing Scrabble and cards with her friends and as a volunteer at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. She was a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years, serving in most all of the official positions. Eastern Star will be holding a memorial service during calling hours.

She is survived by her son, Richard and wife Sallie of Torrington and North Carolina; granddaughter Susan and husband Tushar Kulkarni of West Hartford; and great-granddaughter Maya and daughter Joanne and her husband, David Prindle, of Torrington; grandsons Timothy Prindle of South Carolina, Mathew Prindle of Torrington; great-grandson Christian and Nicholas Prindle of Canton. She was predeceased by her husband, Adelbert Bartley, and brother, Alexander Lejeune.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 1, at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 2 Goshen Road, West Torrington. Calling hours are Monday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Phalen Funeral Home, 285 Migeon Ave., Torrington. Burial will be immediately following the service at Hillside Cemetery, and a light luncheon will follow after burial at the First Congregational Church.
