Anne “Jane” LeJeune Burleson Popplewell
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Jane Burleson LeJeune Popplewell passed on to heaven on Thursday, March 20, 2008.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Ostay LeJeune and DeRosa LeJeune; her first husband, Richard Burleson; her brother, Norbert LeJeune; and her brother and sisterin-law, Edward Burleson and Helen Burleson Cain.
She majored in history in Louisiana, and in her early years she worked as a bank teller. Later she moved to New Orleans, where Richard was instrumental in the establishment of the University of New Orleans. They moved to the Middle East (Bahrain) and were there for five years before Richard died in 1991. Jane decided she wanted a new life, and chose Myrtle Beach as her new home. She immediately became active in St. Andrew Church and the church’s women’s club, serving a term as president. Her real calling was in the arts and music, and she became one of the earliest members of the Long Bay Symphony Guild, devoting much of her time in support of the mission of the LBS.
Jane is survived by one daughter, Mary Susan Burleson Klumpp and husband Eugene of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her husband of four years, Bill Popplewell of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Luna Rose Lejeune Ardoin of Eunice and Verlie LeJeune Chaumont of Lafayette; one brother, Clement LeJeune of Jennings; and sistersin-law Willie Mae LeJeune of Oberlin and Vera Burleson of Sulphur; and many nieces and nephews.
The family received friends 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 24, in McMillan & Small Funeral Home on 67th Ave. N in Myrtle Beach. A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. today at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Myrtle Beach. Services will be Thursday, March 27, in Hixson Funeral Home of Sulphur, with burial to follow in Burleson-Duhon Cemetery in Lake Charles. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 424 E. 92nd St., New York, NY 10128-6804.
