Son of Otis Leland and Nancy Spaulding Leland.

Levi enlisted for service in the Civil War on June 1, 1861. He mustered in on July 16, 1861 as a Corporal in Company A, 3rd Vermont Volunteer Regiment. Levi was promoted to Sargent on August 13, 1861. He re-enlisted December 21, 1863, and was promoted to 1st Sargent ten days later. He was reported missing in action at Spotsylvania, Virginia May 12, 1864, and died from his wounds two days later.
