Opera Singer. He was born and died in Moscow (Russian Federation). He was one of the two leading tenors at the Bolshoi Opera in the '30s, '40s and '50s, along with Ivan Kozlovsky. He sang in roles such as Sindbad, Berendei, Gerald, Werther, Vladimir Dubrovsky, the Duke in Rigoletto and Romeo. However, his more known role was Lenskij in Piotr Tchaikvosky's opera "Eugene Onegin", a part he performed for the first time in 1927 and repeated on 500 occasions. A handsome man, he was extremly popular for the women, despite of he was homosexual, but he could not proclaim in Stalin's Russia of fear of sanctions.
