Ocala - Robert E. Libbey, age 79, died Thursday, January 22, 2015, in the comfort of his home. Bob is survived by his wife, Phyllis, four children: Nancy Cawthon, Debi Parsons, Michael Libbey, and Mary Hennessey. There are nine grandchildren, and two great- grandchildren.
Bob grew up in Somerville MA, where his passion for sports and his toughness on the field shaped his character in combat and in life. Bob's distinguished military career spanned 30 years with combat tours in Korea and Vietnam. His awards include: the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. At 17, Bob joined the Marine Corps to fight in the Korean War. He later enlisted in the Air Force where he was part of history assigned to the Moscow-Washington hotline. Bob was recognized for his talent and was offered an appointment as a US Army Signal Corps Warrant Officer and was deployed to Vietnam. Upon his return, he served with the 82nd Airborne, becoming one of the chosen Green Berets.
Bob's other passion was coaching youth sports, being not only a coach but a builder of young men. The discipline and patriotism instilled in him as a young Marine remained as Bob lived the motto of the Marine Corps, 'Semper Fidelis', all his life. A Mass will be held Saturday, January 31st at 1:00 p.m. at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
