Margaret Ellen Alexander, wife of T.R. Alexander, died last Friday evening at 11:30 o'clock at her house, 380 Eleventh street. She had been in failing health for a number of years, but bore her ills so uncomplainingly and kept so young in spirit that few realized death was so near for her.
Mrs. Alexander was born in Marion county, Indiana, in 1858, her father, Albert List, being a pioneer farmer of that section, and though proud of Iowa, she was ever a staunch defender of her native state. She was married March 6, 1877 to T.R. Alexander, and three years later came to Marion, and three years later came to Marion, entering at once into the active life of this then western community. Mr. Alexander was for 42 years one of the town's leading druggists, and Mrs. Alexander filled an important place in the social, cultural and religious life of the community. From her girlhood days she had been a member of the Presbyterian church, and until her health failed, was active in its organizations. She joined the Cary club in 1881 and for forty-five years had been a member of the O.O.P. club. A woman characterized by kindness, culture and charm, her home, with its sincere and gracious hospitality, has ever been one of the favorite places of the community. She was a lover of good books, and was almost an authority on poetical works. Had there been nothing else, her charities and kindly helpfulness have endeared her to a large part of the community.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mabel Alexander, librarian in the dram and music department of the public library in Detroit. One son, Alfred S. died in 1880. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and by two sisters, Mrs. Martha Jones of Franklin, Indiana and Mrs. U.H. Smith of Bloomington, Ind. Two sisters, Nellie List of Franklin, Ind. and Mrs. C.C. VanNuys of Daytona Beach, Fla., preceded her in death.
Monday afternoon the Yocom chapel was completely filled with the friends who completely filled with the friends who came to pay final tribute to the splendid character of the departed. the service was very simple. While the organ was softly sending forth musical comfort. Rev. Gilbert Vorhies, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Fairfield, nephew of the deceased, read a comforting scripture lesson, then read two short poems, one by Edward Guest, entitled "My Creed", and another he himself had written. Both of theses poems were found among Mr. Alexander's keepsakes, Dr. W.E. Fisher of the Marion Presbyterian church, offered prayer.
The pallbearers were R.N. Fitzgerald, Charles E. Blinks, W.W. Vaughn, W.B. Sebern, E.J. Miller and John Gill. Interment was made in beautiful Oak Shade cemetery.
