Martha Helen List Athens, 106, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016. Helen was born in Sale Creek, Tennessee, November 19, 1909.
She attended Martha Washington University (now Emory and Henry College) and graduated from the University of Miami (FL) in 1931 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was a longtime active member of South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. Helen was an avid golfer and enjoyed many years playing at San Jose Country Club and Ponte Vedra Country Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Edwin P. Athens; her sister Alyne List; two brothers, William List and James List. She is survived by her children: James (Stephanie) Athens, Robert (Tia) Athens, William Athens and Julie Athens (William) Read; 4 grandchildren, Kimberly and Alyson Read and James and Martha Athens; and three great-grandchildren, Griffin and Grant Athens and Austin Napier.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, 2137 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, 32207 or Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, 32257. A graveside service will be held in Oaklawn Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, with Dr. Bruce E. Hedgepeth officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard, South.
