Died of wounds received when trampled by horses in France.

Ambrose was born in Manchester but spent some of his boyhood in Halifax and as a young man he served in the Boer War, after which he became a war correspondent.
In 1911 He gave his services to the Greeks in the Balkan Wars and became a much-decorated Colonel, and also the godfather to King Constantine's daughter, Princess Elizabeth.
At the beginning of the Great War he joined the Canadian forces in Canada as a private soldier.
On his return to England he was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Field Artillery and became Adjutant to the 63rd Brigade. In March 1915 he was badly injured by some stampeding horses during an inspection of the Brigade by the King. He was invalided out of the Army in June and returned to his home in Manchester in July. He subsequently went to live with his in-laws in March 1916 at South Parade, Cleckheaton and died there three months later.

He is commemorated on the St John's and Spenborough war memorial.
