Mrs. John L. Johnson, 79, honored longtime resident of Sycamore, died Tuesday morning at the local hospital, where she had been a patient for two weeks. She had been in failing health for the past year.
Hilda Loft was born in Sweden on March 31, 1879, the daughter of Olaf and Elsie Johnson Loft, and came to America in 1892 with her parents, locating in rural Sycamore, where they farmed. On December 19, 1901, she was married to John L. Johnson, the wedding taking place at her parental home in rural Sycamore. They farmed north of Malta, until retiring 18 years ago, and moved to Sycamore, their home being at 901 DeKalb Avenue.
Mrs. Johnson was a lifelong member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and active in its work until her health failed. She was also very devoted to her home and family and possessed many kindly traits of character that won for her an ever-widening circle of friends.
Surviving to mourn her passing are her husband; a son, Roy of Pittsfield, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Archie (Eleanor) Gould of rural Sycamore and Jeanette at home; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Swanson of La Grange; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons and a daughter.
Pastor Eric N. Hawkins of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church officiated at the final services, held first at the Coultrip Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Thursday and later at the church, at 2 o'clock, with burial taking place in the Elmwood cemetery.
