Elsie May (Skip) Baker died on Thursday July 30th at St. Alphonses Regional Medical Center from a sudden illness, surrounded by her family.

Skip was born on March 21, 1928 in San Mateo, California, to Frank Lopes and Mary Silva Lopes, both originally from Portugal. As a young girl she lived with her mother, Mary, aunt and grandpa Tony on his dairy farm. She attended Milbre Elementary where she got the nickname Skip because she loved to skip rope. Our mother grew up in the country riding horses. She competed on drill teams and rode race horses. She graduated from Burlingame High School.

She and her girlfriends liked to go watch the rodeos where she met the love of her life, Bobby Baker. They were married a year later in Reno, Nevada and made their home in Half Moon Bay, California, where she rode Bob's rope horses.

Her first son, Boyce Lynn Baker, was born on October 28, 1951. They soon moved to Concord, California where Skip worked in a western store and modeled clothes.

She and her husband started the Contra Costa Jr. Horseman Association in 1955. She also started the Contra Costa Jr. Horseman drill team.

In 1960 Skip, Bob and Boyce moved to Galt, California, where she was active in Boy Scouts, women’s city league softball, and raising and showing quarter horses. She also started a 4-H horse group in Galt.

On August 3,1965 her second child, a daughter, Stacey Marie Baker, was born. Skip would continue her love of working with kids. She was a 4-H sheep leader, 4-H cooking leader, cheerleading coach, P.T.A. president, volunteer teacher's aide, rodeo co-chairman with her husband, Bob, of the Galt Rodeo, and chairman of the Galt rodeo queen contest.

She sang in the choir at St. Christopher's Catholic church and was in the alter society always helping cook at church dinners.

She was an active partner in her husband Bob's catering business, Bob's Ranch BBQ, She was famous for her secret recipe of Portuguese beans that were always requested on the menu.

In 1994 Skip and her husband Bob would move to Parma, Idaho to be close to her daughter and family. Skip would again be working with kids, volunteering at St. Peter's Catholic School in her grandkids' classes, helping kids read, write and learn their time tables.

She would lose her beloved Bob in September of 2000.
She moved in with her daughter Stacey, and her husband, Pete, “the big Dutchman”, as she liked to call him. He was six foot five and she was a tiny five foot two.

She lived for all the sports her grandchildren would participate in. She was at every soccer game, football game and basketball game, cheering the kids on. She helped do fundraisers for the various teams the kids were on.

She enjoyed her family and friends. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and when you walked into her house there was never any question of which holiday was being celebrated.

Her granddaughter, Ashlee, and her husband, Jose, blessed her with her first great-grandchild, Will Allen Garcia, on August 10, 2012.

Skip was such an amazing wife, mother, sister in-law, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Her life was rich with blessings and full of fun and love.

She is survived by her son, Boyce Baker, his wife Sherry, and a grandson, Ty, of Galt, California; granddaughter, Jessica, of WA; daughter, Stacey; grandsons, Peter Matthew and Jacob, of Ontario, OR; granddaughter, Ashlee, and great-grandson, Will, of Fruitland, ID.
