Charles Loughead Lovering was born in Woonsocket, R.I. on Aug. 31, 1833. He attended the Webster School in Cambridge.

He was the treasurer of Whittenton Mills, and was involved with the Massachusetts Mills and the Merrimack Manufacturing Company of Lowell. He conceived the successful plan of establishing branches of the industry in the South. Charles was one of the organizers of the Union Congregational Church.

His wife was Sarah Rebecca Maltby who was the daughter of Erastus and Almira Smith Maltby. Sarah died on April 29, 1897 at 64 years old. They had six children. When Charles died at home in Taunton on May 1, 1908 he was recognized as one of the city’s most generous philanthropists.
