When Javier and Madelaine Lozada had their first child, a son Thomas, Javier was struck with the tremendous responsibility of being a good father. He thought about how he could go about giving his son direction in his life and decided the best thing to do was to immerse him in sports.

"He loved sports and turned out to be a wonderful man, so I guess it worked," said Lozada. "He was a gift to the world."

Thomas John Lozada died of pneumonia and heart failure November 15, 2001. He was 47 years old, and despite a tragic accident in 1995 that left him a paraplegic, the former New York City firefighter maintained an upbeat and optimistic view of life, and his avid interest in sports.

Thomas Lozada was born in Lawrence, Long Island. He graduated from Jamaica High School and joined the U.S. Army. He served two years with the Signal Corps.

Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Lozada took several civil service tests and was hired by the MTA as a bus driver. He worked six years driving a bus from a Brooklyn Depot and playing for the MTA's softball team, helping the team to five championships. He was finally called up by the New York City Fire Department in 1990 and worked as a firefighter for five years before an accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed.

A resident of the Brunswick Nursing facility in Amityville, Mr. Lozada continued to maintain his interest in sports and was an avid reader.

"His friends from the Fire Department would always try to trip him up with sports questions, but he always knew the answers," said his father. "They even went out and got a sports encyclopedia, but he knew all the answers."

Mr. Lozada also spent time researching his Spanish ancestry, something his father said he was very proud of. He traced his grandparent's history back to Spain.

"He was a very strong, good-hearted person," said his father.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lozada is survived by his brothers, Javier Jr., and his wife Lori Ann of Mississippi; Christopher and his wife Anna of Florida; Marc of Middle Village and Duane of Babylon. His cousin Victor Soto of New Jersey also survives him as do many other cousins, aunts and uncles.

Mr. Lozada reposed at the Lang-Tobia-DiPalma Funeral Home, 406 Deer Park Ave., Babylon where a religious service was held.

Interment was in National Cemetery at Calverton.
