Mrs. Bartlett was born in New York state April 18, 1823. In 1869 she and her husband, William Bartlett, moved to Chickasaw county, where they resided for ten years, then coming to Waterloo to make their home. Elizabeth "Betsy" Ludden was about eleven years old when her parents moved with their eight children from her birthplace in Chenango County, New York to Cattaraugus County, New York. Three years later, according to a journal written by "Betsy's" brother Enos, the family moved to Rock Island County, Illinois, settling in Hampton Township near the Michael Bartlett family. William Wells Bartlett, the oldest child of Zerviah Edwards Wells and Michael R. Bartlett, was born in Gallatin County, Illinois, His family moved to Rock Island County, Illinois about 1828; they were enumerated in the 1830 Illinois Federal Census in Jo Daviess County - Rock Island County was formed in 1831 from Jo Daviess, so even though the family was enumerated in the 1830 Jo Daviess County Census, they were living near presentday Rock Island. William's mother died in 1832, probably in Rock Island County, but her resting place has not officially been found but it was heard she had died in an Indian attack in nearby Fort Atkinson.

In 1839, a 19 year old William Wells Bartlett married 16 year old Betsy and were enumerated in the 1840 Illinois Federal Census, Rock Island County, Hampton Township. They were living next to Betsy's sister Eunice and her husband Samuel Cooper. Betsy and William's second child, Sarah, was born in Illinois in January 1845. By 16 September 1846 they were living in Jackson County, Iowa when William applied for a patent on 32 acres of land located in Jo Daviess County, Illinois.

Betsy and William made several moves before they finally settled in Black Hawk County, Iowa around 1879. They were traced from Jackson County, to Fayette County, to Chickasaw County, to Bremer County, to Black Hawk County, back to Bremer County, back to Chickasaw County, and finally back to Black Hawk County.

William's brother Joel was also enumerated in the 1852 Fayette County Census. The "History of Chickasaw County," page 317, states the first settlement made in Chickasaw Township, Chickasaw County, Iowa was made by brothers William and Joel Bartlett and others in 1853. We know, however, that Joel was there in 1852, as his wife died 11 November 1852 and according to the cemetery record, she was the first burial in Cedar View Cemetery, located in Chickasaw Township. Chickasaw County was established 30 June 1853 from parent county Fayette. It was not determined if Clermont Township was located in the portion of Fayette County which became Chickasaw County.

In 1856, brother Michael was living in Mitchell County, Iowa and brother Joel was living in Floyd County, Iowa. Betsy and William had moved to Bremer County, Iowa. Betsy's parents, Sila and Lemuel Ludden, and Betsy's brother and wife, Harriet M. and Enos Ludden, were living with the family. They had just moved to Iowa, as the census stated they had been in Iowa "0" years.

In June of 1856, William Bartlett and his brother-in-law, Enos Ludden, both of Bremer County, paid $320 each for land located south of Nashua in what was then known as Pearl Rock in Bradford Twp, Chickasaw County, Iowa. William bought the SW H of the SE H of section 31, twp 94, range 14 and Enos purchased the SE H of the SW H, from Ester and David Ripley of Floyd County, Iowa.

By the time the 1860 census was taken, Betsy and William had moved to Waterloo, Iowa. William's sister, Lucinda, and her husband Isaac Kimsey had recently moved to Iowa from Illinois and were living in Bremer County, Iowa along with brothers Joel and Michael.

Their two oldest children, "Henry", age 19, and Sarah, age 15, were living in Chickasaw County with their grandparents, Sila and Lemuel Ludden. A daughter was born to Betsy and William in 1863 in Janesville, Bremer County, Iowa, indicating the family had returned to Bremer County. William W. Bartlett and his son William "Henry" Bartlett both served in the Civil War. William W. enlisted 14 Oct 1864 at Dubuque, Iowa, the year following his son's enlistment on 15 Aug 1863. William W. served in Company H, 7th Iowa Cavalry and the military records list his occupation as "lawyer" however, all census records listed his occupation as "farmer." With William and son "Henry" both gone, the eldest male in the household was the 14 year old Wilson.

Pioneer families faced tremendous hardships during the Civil War. Betsy and her seven children were living near other family members whose husbands were also gone - Michael Bartlett also enlisted to serve in the Civil War, as did brother-in-law Isaac Kimsey. Brother Joel did not serve. N William was discharged 24 Jun 1865 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and returned home to Bremer County, Iowa. In January 1866, 21 year old daughter Sarah Bartlett died and was buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Janesville, Bremer County, Iowa. There is no tombstone.

Betsy's and Williams last child, daughter Jessie, was born 23 April 1866. In September of the same year, 16 year old Wilson Bartlett died and was buried beside Sarah. Wilson also does not have a tombstone. William Bartlett applied for a Civil War Pension 1 Mar 1866, claiming that he had lost the sight of the right eye from a disease he contracted in the War. His address on that document was Janesville, Iowa. The following entry was found in
Volume 3, "List of Pensioners on the Roll - 1883": Wm. Bartlett - Loss of sight of right eye and impaired use of left - $18. Compared to the more than 40 pension records examined, $18 a month was a very high pension.

According to Betsy's obituary, the family moved back to Chickasaw County in 1869 and lived there for the next 10 years. Betsy's father Lemuel Ludden and her brother Enos and his family were long-time residents of Chickasaw County. In 1869 their son "Henry", now age 29, had married Mary Elizabeth Felton and they were also farming in Bradford Township. Mary Elizabeth Felton was the daughter of Joel Bartlett's wife Adeline - they were also living in Bradford Township. Daughter Elizabeth had married Charles Jones in 1869; they were living in Floyd County in 1870.

Betsy's brother Enos Ludden whose wife had died in 1875 and Enos' son, Marion, were also living with the family. Betsy and William's son, Henry, his wife and two children were living nearby in dwelling #181. Daughter Lydia had married Mark Miles in 1872 and was living in Kossuth County in 1880. The August 6, 1880 census taker enumerated the family again (Page 605, Dwelling 285), this time the household was listed with Henry as its head and William and Betsy were living with him, his wife and two children. The rest of Betsy and William's family was not enumerated on this day, nor was Enos or Marion. This time William's parents were listed as being born in Illinois; they were born in Vermont.

Their son "Bert" married his cousin "Mary" Ludden in 1880, but they could not be found in the 1885 census. Their daughter Ida married John Hosier in 1882 and they were living with Betsy and William in 1885. They were either living with or next to their daughter Jessie and her family. No Dwelling numbers were given. Jessie married Fred Bronson in 1888 and William's son Albert "Bill" Bartlett married Martha Denny Wiltse, who was 12 years his senior, in 1892; they were living nearby Betsy's family.

William Wells Bartlett died in 1896; he and Betsy had celebrated 56 years of marriage in 1895, a feat few couples accomplished in that era. Betsy applied for a Civil War Widow's Pension 25 April 1896, two weeks following William's death.

Betsy and William were fortunate in that all their children remained in Iowa; five of them are buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Waterloo where Betsy and William are buried; Ida is also buried in Black Hawk County, but in the Poyner Township Cemetery; and "Bill" was interred with his wife in Charles City, Iowa. Most families were split apart in the quest for a better life as new lands were settled ever westward. While some pursued the dream, others remained behind, often to never again see their loved ones.

After William's death, Betsy made her home with her children, mainly with her daughter Lydia. However, in the 1900 census, she was living with her daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Charles Jones. Two of Betsy's daughters died in the next four years: Youngest daughter Jessie Bartlett Bronson died in 1902 and oldest daughter Elizabeth died in 1904, both residents of Waterloo.

In the 1905 State Census, Betsy was living with her daughter Lydia and son-in-law Mark Miles. Betsy died in 1906, just two days shy of her 83rd birthday. She had suffered from tuberculosis for quite some time. In addition to the obituary which appeared in the Waterloo Daily Courier was an obituary from the semi-weekly Waterloo Reporter. That obituary stated that Mrs. Bartlett was "accounted one of the best-informed women regarding Waterloo's early history." Mrs. John Hosier was called to Waterloo, Iowa, Tuesday to attend the funeral of her mother, Mrs. Bartlett, who died recently.

Albert "Bill" Bartlett was the last remaining member of this immediate family when he died in Waterloo 19 February 1954 at the age of 94 years and two months.
