John Frederick Luke was a Hessian: German mercenary for Burgoyne (German soldier paid to fight for the British). He came with British troops in 1776. He was captured during the Battle of Saratoga, Burgoyne surrendered, and Johann F. Luecke was among those who surrendered.

Children of Johann Friederich Luecke a/k/a John Frederick Luke & Elizabeth (Betsey, Betty) Stone:

1. John Jr. b. 19 June 1779 Woodstock, VT., m. Polly Pelton, lived in South Gower, Ontario, Canada, returned abt 1861 to US with "Numerous children"-stated on petition for land. Signed Oath of Allegiance 21 Feb 1805. Died 1865.

2. David Luke b. 12 Jan 1781 Woodstock, VT. Served Benedict's Regiment, NY Militia, War of 1812. 1810 US Census lived in German Flats, Herkimer Co., NY with 2 males & 1 female ages 16-20. 1820 US Census lists him alone.

3. Lucy b. 5 Oct 1782 Woodstock, VT., m. Gardiner Gustin 5 July 1804 in German Flats, NY. She died 20 Nov 1857 Bath, Steuben Co., NY. Children: John, Lucy, George Washington, Phoebe, Sarah, Lucy, Charles, Ann, Giles. 1820 & 1830 US Censuses have family in Hamilton Twp, Madison Co., NY. Land records @ Madison Co. Courthouse, Wampsville, NY.

4. Elizabeth b. ca. 1784, probably Woodstock, VT, m. Abram/Abraham Moon. Two children: William & Abraham Willis Moon, born US. Family moved to Osgoode, Russell Co.,Ontario, Canada where Elizabeth died 12 June 1856. Purchased Lot 36, Conc. 1, Osgoode Twp 9 March 1846.

5. Benjamin b. ca. 1786, probably Reading, VT. m. Lydia Fuller. Died young. Widow remarried, children unknown. Census for Hamilton Twp, Madison Co., NY has Benjamin living near John Luke Sr., Levi Luke, Gardiner Gustin and Abraham Moon.

6. Levi, b.20 Jan 1788 (or 1785) Reading VT. m. Silence Brown 12 July 1812 Frankfort, NY. Levi died 26 Oct 1854 aged 60 and is buried with many family members in Amboy Center Cemetery, Oswego Co. NY. {A memorial stone to John Luke, Sr. and wife Betsey Luke was erected in this cemetery by grandson Lewis D. Luke, Levi's son. Children: Betsey Stone, John, Lewis D., Marcus, Sally, Cynthia, and Mary Jane Luke.

7. Abel, b. 20 July 1791 Reading VT. m. Laura A. Lamphier 1 Sept 1816. Abel died 29 March 1856. He & wife are buried Rock Creek Cemetery, Morgan Twp, Ashtabula Co, OH. Children: Abel Lamphier Luke, Albert Stone Luke, Elijah Shaw Luke, and Mary Elizabeth (m. Alanson Cogswell).

8. Hannah b. 20 April 1794 Reading, VT. m. William Beach in August 1822. Family lived in South Gower, Ontario, Canada. Hannah died 7 May 1871, she & husband buried in South Gower Cemetery. Children: Benjamin Frederick, Solomon, George, Hannah, Sanford W. 1851 Census for South Gower shows John Luke, Sr.'s widow, Betsey Luke, aged 88 born in US, living with daughter Hannah & family.

9. Sarah, b. 1796 Reading, VT. m. David Beach, brother of William Beach above, in 1815. Sarah died 5 Feb 1874 Beachburg, Renfrew Co., Ontario. She & husband are buried in Union Cemetery, Beachburg. Children: Chilion (died young),Elizabeth, Abel, John, Nancy, David (died young), Ruth, Hannah, Joseph, Caroline.
