Paul A. Lyons Jr., 74, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, with his devoted and loving wife, Terry, at his side at the Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, following a period of declining health. He was born in Concord on March 9, 1938, the son of the late Paul A. Lyons Sr. and Emma G. (Phillips) Lyons. Paul leaves behind his devoted wife and best friend of 44 years, Teresa A. Terry Lyons of Wayland. He was the brother of the late Jeanne Hall Ferree and Lawrence Lyons. Paul is also survived by several nieces, nephews and close friends. He was known as Papa Paul to his large extended family. He spent his earlier years in Concord and had been a resident of Wayland for more than 51 years. He was a graduate of Concord High School and received his associate degree in fire science from Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester. Paul had a long career as a firefighter/administrative clerk for the Town of Wayland Fire Department and retired in 1983 after over 20 years of dedicated service to the town and its residents. Paul began his career as a call firefighter for the Town of Concord and was then appointed as a full time firefighter for the Town of Wayland. He also was an instructor at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow, where he also received his professional training in the Municipal Fire Instructors Training Course. Paul served his country during the Korean Conflict with the United States Air Force as an airman second class in Saudi Arabia and was then appointed to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., where he completed his military duty. Paul enjoyed traveling with his wife, Terry, especially to New Hampshire and the Cape. He was an outgoing man and loved to meet and talk with people from all walks of life. At his request, there will be no funeral home visitations and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held Sunday, Feb. 3, at noon, at the Bryant Memorial Chapel of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (off Rte. 30), Wayland. Interment in the National Cemetery in Bourne will be held at a later date for his family. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial donations in Pauls memory be sent to the Wayland Firefighter Association, PO Box 341, Wayland, MA 01778.
