BERNHARD MAHNKE

Bernhard H. Mahnke, 86, of 1329 S. 10th St., Manitowoc, died late Tuesday evening in Park Lawn Home, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Norval W. Kock will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Mr. Mahnke was born June 22, 1891 in Manitowoc, son of the late Christ and Bertha Wilsing Mahnke. He was reared in Manitowoc and attended First German Evangelical Lutheran School. June 22, 1916 he married Bessie Drumm in First German Evangelical Lutheran Church by Rev. Karl Machmiller. From 1918 until his retirement in 1960 he owned and operated Mahnke-Multerer Grocery Store at the corner of 13th St. and Washington St. He was a member of First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, was past member of its school board and past president of the church council. He was also a past president of Retail Grocer's Assn. and an honorary member of Manitowoc Evening Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Wallace Strutz of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Elmer (Clara) Haupt of Manitowoc; two grandchildren, Ellen Strutz of West Allis and James Strutz of Manitowoc. Two brothers and seven sisters preceded her in death.
Friends may call in Urbanek & Schlei Funeral Home, State Street Chapel, Manitowoc, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and in the church from 9 a.m. Friday until the time of service. Memorials may be made to First German building fund, Manitowoc Lutheran High School or Memorial Hospital.
