Fred Mahnke, 53, of 1131 South 10th street, a local barber for the past 35
years, died early this morning at Holy Family hospital following a brief
illness.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Pfeffer funeral home with members
of the Drews-Bleser post of the American Legion in charge. Burial will be in
Evergreen cemetery.
A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mahnke Sr., Mr. Mahnke was born in Manitowoc
in 1895. He learned the barber trade here when a young man of about 18 and
worked in local shops for about five years prior to World War I. Enlisting in
the army in March, 1918, he served during the first world war until his
discharge in October, 1919. After returning home he operated a shop in
partnership with the late John Kaufman under the Manitowoc Savings bank. Later
he operated his own business in the 1200 block on South 10th street for a number
of years before being employed by the Vogel brothers on Washington street three
years ago. For the past two months he had conducted the shop at 1520 South 10th
street. In addition to the local American Legion post, he was a member of the
barbers' union here.
In 1919 he married the former Alice Gleason, who survives him along with three
daughters, Mrs. Harry Herman, Mrs. Elmer Engelbrecht and Miss Mary all of this
city; two brothers, Reinhart and Louis Mahnke; two sisters, Mrs. William Croll
and Mrs. August Tactz of Manitowoc; and six grandchildren.
The body may be viewed at the Pfeffer funeral home from 10 a.m. Sunday until the
time of services Monday morning.
