JOHN W. MAHNKE (d. 1966)

John W. Mahnke, 83, of 1106 S. 14th St., Manitowoc, died Sunday night at Calumet
Memorial Hospital, Chilton. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Wednesday at First
German Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. L.H. Koeninger will
officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Mahnke was born June 26, 1883 in the Town of Rockland, son of the late John
and Hulda Schneider Mahnke. He married the former Clara Bartz June 18, 1907.
Following their marriage the couple lived on the home farm Rt. 2, Reedsville
until 1942, moving to Manitowoc. The last four years Mr. Mahnke spent in nursing
homes. The couple celebrated its golden wedding anniversary in 1957.
Mr. Mahnke helped organize the Reedsville Co-operative and served as its president
from 1918 to 1950. He was Town of Rockland chairman and a member of the county
board for seven years. Mr. Mahnke was president of the Rockland Telephone Co. for
30 years and treasurer for a school district.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Roland Sr., of Reedsville and Marcus of
Manitowoc; two brothers, Otto of Manitowoc and Henry of Brillion; two sisters,
Mrs. Clara Valleskey and Mrs. Frieda Hallemeyer of Manitowoc; four grandchildren
and nine great grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 3 pm Tuesday until 10 am Wednesday at Reedsville Funeral
Home and from 11 am until time of service at the church.
