Fatal Car's Driver Detained As Witness

OTTAWA - Eddy Lee Bowers, 40, of 1584 Stewart Rd., Lima, was incarcerated in the Putnam County jail Monday as a material witness in connection with the Sunday evening death of two bicycle riders near Vaughnsville, Putnam County Sheriff Robert Beutler said today.

Killed in the collision were Dr. Will W. Moody, 53, and Roberta Ann Bowers, 35, of Vaughnsville. The cyclists were struck from the rear by a car driven by Bowers, the woman's former husband, sheriff's reports indicate. The Bowers were divorced May 2, 1973.

Dr. Moody and Mrs. Bowers were traveling south on State Rt. 115 two miles north of Vaughnsville. The bodies and bicycles landed an estimated 84 feet from the point of impact and the auto stopped approximately another 90 feet beyond the bodies.

Sheriff's deputies and the highway patrol are continuing their investigation.

Dr. Moody was born Nov. 6, 1919, in Semore, Ind., a son of LaRue Burdette and Myrtle Olive Moody. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Abron (Susan) Zwilling of Woods Hole, Mass., and one grandson.

He had practiced medicine in Vaughnsville since 1953, and was a member of the Lima Memorial Hospital Emergency Room Group. He graduated from Manatowoc, Wis., High School in 1936 and from the University of Wisconsin in 1940. He attended Oberlin College and Wisconsin College each for one year. He served in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1946. He attended medical school at Western Reserve and graduated in 1951. He was a Phi Beta Kappa.

His intership was at Harper Hospital, Detroit, Mich., and he served his residency at Lima Memorial Hospital in 1952.

A member of the American Youth Hostels, he was an avid cyclist and often rode his bicycle from Vaughnsville to Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Orchard Hill Tennis Club, Natural Wildlife Federation, Lima, and Allen County Academy of Medicine, Central Ohio Diabetes Association, American Diabetes Association, Ohio State Medical Association, American Heart Association, American College of Emergency Physicians, University of Wisconsin Alumni Association, Ohio State Medical Board and the American Academy of General Practice.

He was also a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church, Madison, Wis.

Graveside services will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Manatowoc, Wis., Thursday afternoon. Friends may call at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, this evening and after noon Wednesday.

The family requests memorials be given to the Heart Fund, Cancer Society or the Diabetes Association.

Roberta Bowers was born July 20, 1938, in Lima. She was a daughter of Zurney and Dessie Brown Glasco. She was married to James Mumaugh, who died. She later married and divorced Eddy Bowers.
