Sgt. John MacAulay was a Police Sergeant for the San Francisco City Police Department. He was just 35 when he was shot and killed by a robbery suspect, shortly after going off-duty. While on his way home he noticed a vehicle that was wanted in connection with an armed robbery of a Supermarket that had occurred earlier that day. Sgt. MacAulay stopped the vehicle in question and walked towards it. The suspect attempted to draw a P38 pistol from a briefcase which he had in the stolen car he was driving. Sgt. MacAulay tried to restrain the subject by putting him in a headlock, after a brief struggle ensued. The suspect then drew a .38 caliber pistol from his waistband and shot Sgt. MacAulay in the head, killing him. The suspect fled back to the Jack Tar Hotel where his wife was staying, he shot and killed her, then turned the gun on himself, committing suicide. The suspect was a former mental patient. Sgt. MacAulay was with the Police Department 11 years, and one of their most decorated Officers. He had recieved three Medals of Valor, five Police Commissioner Awards, and over 100 Captain's Commendations. He was survived by nine brothers and sisters.
