Hazel Macaulay, resident of Menlo Park, age 87, passed away on August 11, 2011 joining her beloved husband Edward who preceded her in January. Known most of all for her famous hugs, her warm smile and loving, kind heart, Hazel will be missed by all who knew her. Hazel was born March 8, 1924 in Winchendon, MA, to proud Finnish parents, Otto and Hilda Manninen. She graduated from Greenwich High School, Greenwich, CT in 1942 extending her education at Katherine Gibbs School, NY, completing a secretarial skills course in 1943. Hazel enjoyed a long career as an outstanding executive secretary in advertising and broadcasting, beginning with NBC in New York and San Francisco. She continued her career after moving to California, subsequently partnering with her husband Edward to form Gomac Enterprises, an independent television sports production firm in the early '70's. During 1981-2006 Hazel was among the top advertising salespeople for the program of the annual Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance garnering honors in 2002 for her outstanding achievement over the years. No one could resist her warm and charming approach. A most treasured member of Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley since 1979, Hazel frequently served as deacon, providing comfort and care to many in the congregation. For decades, she and Edward coordinated their famous Stanford tailgate parties for friends inside and outside the church. Her hosting and cooking skills are legendary. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Robin Polastri of Half Moon Bay, two step-sons, Gordon Macaulay of Albuquerque, NM and Duncan Macaulay of Cave Creek, AZ, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of Hazel's life will be held at Valley Presbyterian Church, 945 Portola Road, Portola Valley, 94028, on October 16 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance of Hazel may be made to Valley Presbyterian Church.
