Slema Mary Lehto was born in Oululand, Finland on March 18th, 1879, the daughter of Herman and Katie Makkonen. She was baptized and confirmed in Finland and in 1897 emigrated to the United States, coming to Urness township. On Nov. 6th, 1899 she was united in marriage to Isaac Lehto. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Lehto made their home on a farm in Urness township, which has been their home for the past sixty one years. Mrs. Lehto passed away at the Douglas County hospital on Nov. 19th, 1960, at the age of 81 years. Surviving are her husband, Isaac, six sons and four daughters: Charles of Minneapolis; Jack of Mound City, Kansas; Peter of Long Beach, Calif.; Emil, Alfred and Ben at home; Evelyn (Mrs. Alex Carlson) of Finlayson; Kathryn of Minneapolis, Alice (Mrs. Joseph Penn) of Chicago; Ida (Mrs. George Soukup) of Cicero, Ill.
Surviving are six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Katie (Mrs. John Lee) of Sebeka; two brothers: Jack and Vaino Makkonen of Brandon. She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant daughter, two sons, Leonard and Theodore, two sisters and two brothers.
