Suggested edit: Modesta Mann Barton Hoy was born in LeGrand, Iowa in 1878, the first of six children

She attended schools in Gladbrook, Iowa, then Iowa Normal School and two years at Iowa College, now called Grinnell College.

Her first marriage was to H. Arthur Barton and Englishman and Methodist minister, on December 25, 1901. They had two children, DeArv and Louise. This marriage ended in divorce and the children were raised by Modesta's parents while she pursued a teaching career.

Modesta taught in Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa, and the De Moines Public School System for thirty years. She dedicated her life to the education of her children and the care of her parents in their later life.

At retirement age she was married to Andrew Hoy, who had been a childhood friend in Iowa. They lived a full and happy life after Andrew was 70 years old, and he lived to be 94. The couple resided at Mount San Antonio Gardens, Pomona, California the last eight years of Andrew's life.

After Andrew's passing, Modesta spent her remaining three years of life in the hospital unit at the Gardens where she received constant and loving care. She passed away December 23, 1970.

She left a heritage of true Christian Life to all whose paths touched hers.
