Edith M. Darst

Edith M. "Tedi" Darst died Feb. 1, 2004, at the age of 87. She was born May 2, 1916, in Bellefonte, Pa., one of three children of Harry and Maude Mann.

In the 1930s, she and her family moved to Anniston, Ala. After graduating from Anniston High School in 1934, she attended Alabama State College for Women in Montevallo for three years.

In 1937, she came to California alone on a bus with nothing but a suitcase in her hand to join her sister Lou in Los Angeles to attend UCLA. She met her husband Bob at a beach party arranged by her sister and Bob's sister-in-law. The two were married Feb. 3, 1940. She earned her bachelor's degree in education from UCLA in June of that year.

In 1943, their first child was born, and her husband was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Forces and stationed in England. After his discharge, the couple had two more children and moved to Garden Grove, where she taught for 10 years.

During the 1970s, she took a clerical job at the Tustin Library and eventually moved to Tustin. After her retirement, in 1986, she and her husband moved to Davis to be closer to their family.

Throughout her life, she had many pass times that she shared with her family, including fishing, swimming, reading good books and spending time with friends and family. She also enjoyed taking trips with the Davis Travelaires and the many activities at the Davis Senior Center. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her, her family said.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Allen Darst, on Dec. 3, 1996; her son, William E. Darst; and her two sisters, Susan Darch and Louise St. Clair.

She is survived by her son, Robert A. Darst and his wife Dee of Vista; her daughter, Susan L. Darst of Davis; her grandchildren, Matthew Darst of Panama City, Fla., Narayana Darst of Vista and Anne Marie Darst of Davis; and Bernelle Lovett and Marion Harvey, additional family members.

A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church of Davis, 1620 Anderson Road.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.
