Born in Puerto Rico, Betsy come to the United States when she was only 2 months old; leaving out of Jobos, Puerto Rico on the ship named Corozal. She was raised from infancy in Abbeville, Louisiana, the daughter of Elijah and Mary Kirkpatrick.
She graduated from Louisiana State University and pursued her Masters in education at Peabody College.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Glenn F. Manning. Survivors include children, Frank Manning, Mary Brinkley, Alice Lanier and Sam Manning; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sarah Reade, and Agnes Godchaux; and brother, Elijah Kirkpatrick.
Betsy was an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and President of the Kappa Alumni group 1969 – 1970. She was a docent at the Huntsville Museum of Art for many years, a member of the Huntsville Museum of Art, President of The Women’s Guild of Huntsville Museum of Art 1978 -79, and recipient of the Doris Darling award in 1997. She was a member of the Symphony Guild and on the board of the Huntsville Symphony Youth Orchestra for many years. She was a devoted church member at Church of Nativity, St. Stephens, and St. Thomas Episcopal Churches. She served on the Altar Guild at all three churches, and was a founding member of the Flower Guild at the Church of Nativity.
A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Church of the Nativity. Following the service, there will be visitation for family and friends at the home of Alice and Frederick Lanier.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Nativity Historic Preservation Foundation, 208 Eustis Avenue, SE, Huntsville, AL 35801.
