Julia Brooks Martin, daughter of Lydia L. (née Bradley) and William Martin, was born 1849 in Geauga County, Ohio, where her parents had married in 1844. The Martin family moved in the early 1850s to Iowa, and in the early 1860s returned to Ohio.

Julia Martin and Horace C. Burgess were married reportedly on 25 December 1866 in Pennsylvania. Not long afterwards, the couple moved to Tama County, Iowa, joining Horace's brother and an uncle. The couple's daughter Viva was born in 1871 in Tama County. Julia Burgess and her family by the middle 1880s relocated to Woodward Township, Dallas County, Iowa, and later moved to Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, and then Des Moines, Iowa. Julia and Horace Burgess moved in 1914 to Los Angeles, California.

"MRS. H. C. BURGESS. – Julia B. (Martin) was born in the state of Ohio, July 9, 1849. Her family came west to Independence, Iowa, in her childhood, but after a few years they returned east to Pennsylvania, where she was married to Horace C. Burgess on December 25, 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Burgess removed to Montour, Iowa, and lived there until the year 1884, when they removed to Woodward, Iowa, then later to Maxwell, and still later to Des Moines, where they lived until they went to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1914. Mrs. Burgess was for many years actively engaged in business as proprietor of millinery stores and was very popular. For the last six years her home has been with her only daughter, Mrs. Viva Waldo, at 1740 Victoria Drive, Los Angeles, California. Here her beloved husband passed away last December. Her fine personality and loving heart endeared her to all who knew her, and especially to her daughter and only granddaughter, Mrs. Carmalete Webb. She was an angel of blessing in the home and her place can never be filled. Mrs. Burgess was a faithful Christian for many years. One of God's most lovely children has gone to be with Him forever. The funeral services were held in the home in La Fayette Square, August 17, 1921, with a large company of mourning friends present. The interment was in the Noble Mausoleum of the Inglewood Cemetery in Los Angeles, California." (The Maxwell Tribune, Maxwell, Iowa, 1 Sep 1921, p. 1, col. 6.)
