FRANKLIN - Evelyn A. (Masi) Barker, 76, a former professor of philosophy, died June 26 in her home in Baltimore.


Mrs. Barker was born and educated in Franklin. She lived in Baltimore for more than 35 years.

She graduated from Wheaton College in Norton. She received a master's degree from Vassar, and a PhD from Harvard University.


Mrs. Barker was a founding member of the faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where she was chairwoman of the philosophy de-partment. She previously taught at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y.; Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, and Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio.


She wrote a textbook on the everyday uses of logical reasoning and articles on pressing issues in medical ethics. After she retired, her contributions to UMBC were recognized by a certificate of commendation from Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer.


She was the wife of Stephen F. Barker. In addition to her husband, she leaves two sons, Charles Barker of Baltimore, and George Barker of Boston; a sister, Elisabeth Masi of Franklin; and a brother, Ralph Masi of Franklin.


A memorial Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Church in Franklin. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
