Opal Austman, 98 of Forrest, IL, passed away on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 8:55 AM at Fairview Haven Nursing Home in Fairbury.

Opal Viola was born on September 11, 1913 to William Alvin and Ida Sophia Reinke Masters in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. She grew up in Iowa and Wisconsin. Opal's mother passed away when she was 11 years old. Following that, Opal helped care for her siblings and was responsible for much of the cooking and household care. She moved to Forrest, IL in 1930 and worked as a telephone operator and as a waitress.

Opal married Harry F. "Spot" Austman of September 11, 1945. He passed away in 1985.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one sister: Ruth Hippen and three brothers: Art, Floyd, and Everett "Fritz" Masters.

Opal was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Forrest. She lived her entire married life in Forrest. She moved to Fairview Haven Assisted Living and then to Fairview Haven Nursing Home the last few years of her life. She was appreciative of all the wonderful care that she received at Fairview Haven.

Opal enjoyed and appreciated her life, her family and friends. She was always a proper lady and hostess and she would never let a visitor leave without offering something to eat or drink. Her hobbies included working crossword puzzles and playing cards, especially solitaire. She loved to travel and made many lasting friendships with the people she met.
