Dave was born December 4, 1929 in Monte Vista, Colorado to David H. Mathias Sr. and Jetta Hurdle.
He married Joyce Easley Dec 21, 1951 in Denver, Colorado.
He attended Colorado State University (Aggies) on a football scholarship as quarterback. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and received his Bachelor's degree in Economics. He received his M.S. in Education and was awarded the Ford Foundation Fellowship to complete his Doctorate of Education at the University of Northern Colorado and was a member of various professional organizations.
Dave taught 5th and 6th grade in Greeley and Denver Public Schools.
The Denver Junior Chamber of Commerce honored him as the Outstanding Young Teacher Award in 1963.
He was a coach for a Young America Football team, taught Sunday school for many years, and was a deacon and an elder in his church in Denver.
He was a member of Mountain View Presbyterian Church in Loveland.
Dave was a principal and Director of Elementary Education in Cherry Creek School District and was co-founder and Vice President of the International Graduate School of Education. Dave was an international lecturer in the field of education.
In 1976 he became principal at Big Thompson Elementary School and later was principal of Stansberry Elementary Schools in the Thompson School District until his retirement in 1990.
In his free time Dave enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Annabelle, Bill, Ward and Mary Jayne, and daughter Joan Kathleen (Joni).
Dave is survived by his wife, Joyce, of 62 years, son Greg, and daughter Karen and her husband Jack Dixon. Grandchildren include Crystal and Mark Despain, Holly and Aronn Williamson, Tiffany and Rick Heroff, Amber and Justin Fryar and David Dixon. Great Grandchildren include; Hiram, Noah, Luke, Jonah, Liam, Declan, Lucy and three more expected this summer.
