Ruth Elaine Mathias Arnold

July 12, 1927 - October 21, 2015

Ruth Elaine Martin, of Woodburn, was born July 12, 1927 in Uniontown, Pa., the fourth child of Kenneth and Gertrude Martin.

She was raised in the Uniontown area, and at the age of 17 made her way to Seattle to enroll in nurse’s training at Swedish Hospital and Seattle Pacific College. She was a member of the final class of cadet nurses, graduating in 1948.
While in Seattle, she met her future husband, Archie Mathias, a soldier in the U.S. Army; they were married on June 25, 1948. Ruth worked as a nurse, supporting her husband through college and seminary. He became a pastor in the Free Methodist Church and for the next 40-plus years, they pastored five churches in Illinois and three in Oregon.
They became the parents of two children, David and Nancy.
Ruth worked in a variety of settings, including hospital nursing, private duty nursing, Yamhill County home health, nursing home care, and 14 years with the Red Cross.
She worked tirelessly at her husband’s side during his ministry, calling in homes, singing in the choir, serving as parsonage hostess, and holding every church position from church custodian and gardener to Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher and Women’s Missionary Society president.
Their marriage lasted 49 years. When Archie passed away, Ruth moved to Woodburn to be near her daughter and family.
While attending the Salem First Free Methodist Church, she met Robert Arnold, a member there, when they learned together to visit the shut-ins.
Ruth and Bob fell in love and were married at Salem First Free Methodist Church. After a short period of less than two years, he became ill and passed away.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Nancy, son-in-law Roger, grandchildren Nichole, Daniel, Erich, Emily and her husband Travis, and great-grandson, Ty.
She was preceded in death by her son, David Mathias.
Her memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 at Aurora Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Second and Liberty streets in Aurora. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Aurora Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund, 21553 Liberty St. N.E., Aurora, OR 97002.
Arrangements by Simon-Cornwell Colonial Chapel-Woodburn.
