Richard "Rick" Lane Mathias, long time resident of the Central Valley, passed away after a brief illness surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 29, 2016, at the age of 61. Rick was born on June 3, 1954, in San Luis Obispo, CA. He grew up in Riverdale, CA and on the West Side of the Valley. He began a career in agriculture in the late 1970's on the family farm in Riverdale and went to work for companies such as Anderson Clayton Cotton Gin, Komatsu, Rain for Rent, and finally Agri- Valley Irrigation. Rick played basketball for Riverdale High School and at West Hills Community College. Throughout his life, he loved and played many sports. One of his many highlights was pitching in the American Softball Association's Fast Pitch World Series in Nebraska. He also coached volleyball and basketball for Sequoia Junior High School. His huge community of loyal friends and family will always remember him as a warm hearted, generous, loving man and father who loved life to the fullest. One of his greatest pleasures was watching his daughter Emily play volleyball. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Donald and Frieda Joyce Mathias. He is survived by his wife, Michelle M. (Wade) Mathias of Sanger, CA; daughter, Emily Mary Mathias of Sanger, CA; and sisters, Katherine Mathias-Bowker of Visalia, CA, and Christine "Chris" Mathias of El Sobrante, CA. A Celebration of Life and a Graveside Service will be held at Belmont Memorial Park on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. Rembembrances may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
