Her father came with his family from Scotland to Ontario, Canada about 1854. They settled at Woolwich township in Waterloo County. Based on the birth places of his children, her parents lived for a few years in Waterloo county, where Elizabeth Ann was born, and then during about the next 15 years lived in several towns in southern Ontario (for example Zorra, Stratford and Clinton) where her father worked as a farm labourer. In 1881 her father obtained land and they settled at Hallock, Minnesota.

When Elizabeth Ann married William Thomas Brown in 1886, she was a widow and her name was given as Elizabeth Anderson, but no record has been yet found of her first marriage. Elizabeth Ann was a niece of her husband's step-mother Grace (Harvey) Brown.

Her husband was a carpenter (later a contractor) and lived at London, Ontario. They had a family of seven children, four girls and three boys.
