Lois Mathieson Burkholder, 86, died Feb. 28, in Gainesville, Ga.

Born in Fort Pierre in 1920, Lois was the daughter of Lois and Charles Mathieson. The Mathiesons were a pioneer family in South Dakota and Lois was very proud of their involvement in the frontier years.

Her grandfather George Mathieson settled in Yankton in 1862 some five years after losing his father in the Spirit Lake Massacre in northwestern Iowa. This large extended family relocated to Fort Pierre in 1879, where they were variously engaged in freighting, dry goods, ranching, banking and other enterprises synonymous with western settlement.

Lois' father Charles was a native son of Fort Pierre and the first to finish high school and go to college. Lois moved to Indianapolis, Ind., as a young girl and there attended Butler University. After graduating in 1942, she married Robert Burkholder. They located to Atlanta, Ga. There they raised four children. Bob and Lois were married 64 years. They enjoyed a full lifetime together.

Lois and Bob were active in the United Methodist Church of Waleska, Ga. A memorial service celebrating her life was held there this month. Lois is survived by her husband Bob, of Gainesville, Ga. They have four children: Robert S. and Stephen E. Burkholder of Atlanta, Ga., Jean B. Willers of Gainesville, Ga., and Dr. John H. Burkholder of Menlo Park, Calif.. Nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren are part of Lois' legacy.

In memory of Lois, contributions may be made to Challenged Child, P.O. Box 5758, Gainesville, Ga. 30504.
