Baptized in Templeton, Massachusetts on June 9, 1816. Miss Bush became Mrs. Matthews on April the 20th 1836 here in Gardner.

After her husband's death in'53 Elvira was head of household for a state census taken in 1855. Living with her were five of her six children: Ephraim, 18, a chairmaker, Eliza, 16, Alvin 12, James, 10, and Sarah, 8. Her daughter, Lucina, 13, was living with at her father's home (Artemas Bush).

By 1860 Lucina had returned home. Her and her mother were both working as chair seaters (adding the seat part to chair frames). Also at home were Ephraim, Alvin and Sarah. The boys both worked as chair makers. James, 15, was not at home. He may be the James L. Matthews, laborer, residing with James and Lois Patterson at Barre, Massachusetts according to the census. Eliza had married in '58 to Mr. Averill.

In the 1865 census Ephraim, a chairmaker, was married and brought his new wife into Elvira's home. Alvin was a butcher and Sarah was still seating chairs. Lucina and James were not at home.

More musical chairs in 1870. Lucina, a seamstress, and James (called J. Lewis in this census), a clerk in a store, were both back home with their mother but Alvin and Sarah had moved out. Alvin had married in '67 to Eliza A. Jackson. In '70 they were boarding at a hotel in Gardner (most likely the Central House on the corner of Pearl and Green streets). Ephraim and his wife were still at home.
