CHETOPA - A. Lee Mayfield, 84, of Chetopa died at 6:20 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2007, at Chetopa Manor.

He was born Jan. 13, 1923, in rural Cherokee County to Jasper Earl and Betty Ray (Sexton) Mayfield.

He grew up east of Chetopa and attended country schools and later graduated from Chetopa High School.

He joined the Navy during World War II and served in Saipan. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to Chetopa and began working for the B.F. Goodrich Tire Co. He later worked for Cole's Hatchery, Atlas Steel and later retired from Sunoco.

In earlier years, he had been a member and deacon in the First Baptist Church in Chetopa. He also had attended the Community Bible Church in Chetopa.

He and Beulah Kinsey were married in November 1951. They were later divorced. He married Hazel Dugan, and they were divorced.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Hall of Newport News, Va., and Vickie Wade of Wichita; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leland Mayfield of Welch, Okla.; and a sister, Louise Wagner of Chetopa.

The service was today at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Chetopa with military honors given by the American Legion Post No. 147 of Miami, Okla.

The family suggests memorials to Harry Hynes Hospice and may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, P.O. Box 346, Chetopa, 67336.
