Alberta B. Duncan of Chetopa, Kan., died Monday, March 21, 2005, at Chetopa Manor after an illness. She was 85.

Duncan was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Chetopa to William Josiah and Molina (Smith) Mayfield. She was a 1937 graduate of Chetopa High School.

She worked as a seamstress for Cole of California for 40 years, making parachutes during World War II. She was a homemaker.

She married Robert Duncan on Nov. 5, 1939, in Labette City, Kan. He survives, of the home.

Additional survivors include one son, Robert D. Duncan of Canyon Lake, Calif., and one brother, Archie Mayfield of Chetopa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings, including a twin brother, Albert Mayfield.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas Funeral Home in Welch with the Rev. Clarence Newman officiating. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Chetopa.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
