Rita Grace McCarthy Allen, age 87, of Devonshire Estates in Lenox, Massachusetts, formerly of Pittsfield, passed away December 1, 2013.
She was born in New Haven, Connecticut, June 29, 1926, the daughter of the late Michael and Delia Grace McCarthy, both of whom emigrated from County Clare, Ireland. She began her education at St. Peter's Grammar School and was a graduate of Hill House High School. Continuing her education, she received her nursing license in 1947 from St. Raphael's Hospital School of Nursing in New Haven. Rita continued to work there prior to coming to Pittsfield to make her home. She assisted her late husband, Dr. John M. Allen, who died July 8, 1992, in his medical practice whose offices were located on Courtland Place. Following his death, she returned to work as a nurse for many years at Kimball Farms.
A communicant of the former St. Teresa's Church, she was a member of its Rosary Sodality. Rita was most recently a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. A longtime member of the Berkshire District Medical Auxiliary, Rita also was a member of auxiliaries of the former St. Luke's Hospital and Pittsfield General Hospital. Rita was the last president of the former St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the Berkshire Museum's Auxiliary.
Rita was predeceased by her husband, her son, John "Jay" Michael Allen, Jr. who died July 5, 2012 and her granddaughter, Stephanie M. Allen, who died Aug. 27, 2007.
Rita will be remembered as a thoughtful, sweet, intelligent and classy lady who lived life with amazing grace. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Rita will rest beside her husband and her son in the family lot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. The Lot is located in the St. Jude Section, behind and to the left of the Cross on the upper hill in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
