Andrew McGann , 82, was an undertaker who undertook politics.
He served as a state representative from 1982 to 1992 and as Democratic committeeman for the 18th Ward on Chicago's Southwest Side. He also served stints on the city's personnel and junior college boards.
But he probably was best known for running the Andrew J. McGann & Son Funeral Home, 10727 Pulaski Road - providing both prominent and everyday men and women from the Southwest Side and nearby suburbs their last goodbyes.
"He gave you a great sendoff, as the Irish would say," said Jim Keane, a former colleague in the Illinois House.
At funerals, Mr. McGann 's loud voice could drown out the priests in prayers or songs, but it put grieving family members at ease.
The lifelong White Sox fan's proudest vote as a legislator might have been the one he cast against the state picking up the tab for what was then to be known as the New Comiskey Park, according to his nephew Patrick McGann , a presiding judge in Cook County Circuit Court.
"He was a lifetime season ticket-holder, but he just couldn't do it - he just felt private businesses should not be subsidized by the government," Patrick McGann said. "I remember one of the first baseball games we went to. We parked right out in front, and the cop comes up and says, 'Get out of here ... Oh, Andy! I'm sorry.'
But after that vote, he didn't go back to White Sox park until two years ago."
Mr. McGann 's former colleagues in the House, including Cook County Commissioner John Daley and Ralph Capparelli, remember him as a hard worker and a champion of mental health programs.
"He was an outstanding representative," Daley said.
"He asked to be named chairman of the (House's) mental health committee," Keane recalled. "Jim Thompson was governor. Andy begged, pleaded and cajoled. He proved his case to Thompson. Thompson put an addition of $60 million in the budget that year for mental health."
Mr. McGann wore his emotions on his sleeve, Keane said.
"Sometimes, you'd be embarrassed - he'd be telling you about something that, if in any way sentimental, he'd start crying," Keane said.
Mr. McGann 's father, an immigrant from County Mayo in Ireland, ran McGann 's Tavern at 75th and Halsted streets, cater-cornered from Roger Sheehy's Funeral Home. Mr. McGann learned the funeral trade at
Sheehy's between graduating from Leo High School and serving stints
in the U.S. Navy in World War II and as a Marine in the Korean War.
He became a partner in the business and took over a Sheehy funeral home at 107th Street and Pulaski Road, later renaming it. A picture of Roger Sheehy still hangs over the fireplace at McGann & Son.
Mr. McGann sold his funeral home seven years ago but stayed on to manage it for about five years until retiring to Palm Springs,

Rest in peace.
