Dec. 9, 2010 Velva McHenry County North Dakota, USA
Mary Anderson Hustad, 89, Velva, passed away Thursday, Dece. 9, 2010, at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
Mary June McGovern was born June 7, 1921, in Lakota, to Earl and Bertha McGovern. Mary lived in various towns throughout her childhood. She attended school in Minot, Louisville, Ky., St. Cloud, Minn., Chicago, Springfield, Mass., Sacramento and Oakland, Calif. Mary and her mother then moved back to Minot, where she attended Secretary School and was employed by First National Bank. Later, she was employed with Great Northern Railroad.
Mary met her first husband, Harold Anderson, while having a Coke at Saunders Drug. They were married Oct. 25, 1949. Harold purchased Velva Drug and they made their home in Velva, where they worked as partners until selling the Drug Store in 1972. Mary always enjoyed their summer vacations. Mary went to work for the Journal office in Velva where as she would say she was a "jack of all trades." She later worked for Joe Linnertz, who became one of her dear friends, at the paper. She worked for the Journal for 13 years.
Mary married Bob Hustad in 1989, in El Cajon, Calif., where she became the "stepmomster" to Bob's five grown children. They lived in Cheyenne, Wyo., while Bob finished his employment with Boeing and later retired. They moved back to the farm in Velva where they raised Registered Angus cattle. They enjoyed RVing, spending time with family, watching the grandchildren and going for rides on the Green Hornet. Bob passed away in 1999, and Mary stayed at the farm until 2001, when she moved to the Valley View Assisted Living in Velva.
Mary was blessed with many wonderful friends. She thought the world of her grandkids. She would show off her brag books to anyone who would stop.
Mary liked to have a good time and have a good laugh. She entertained Bridge Club and homemakers for many years and she was known to try out new recipes on her guests. Mary would always dress up for Halloween and would decorate every inch of her house for Christmas; she loved the holidays. She liked to play games; spoons were one of her favorites. She would laugh so hard, and then everyone would start laughing. She was so excited when she learned how to play pinochle and was always up for a game of whist or blitz with friends. She liked a good joke or a funny story. She would sit for hours with her grandkids and play whatever they wanted. Mary was always on the go and lived life to the fullest. She held a special spot in many hearts and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Special people in Mary's life were: her children, Mike (Susan) Hustad, Indio, Calif., Carlene (Tommy) Nation and Rik Hustad, both El Cajon, Todd (Brenda) Hustad, Minot, Kristie (Kacey) Abrahamson, Velva, and Shari (Joel) Metz, Minot; grandchildren, Diane, Lisa, Colby, Colter, Ashley, Tate, Callen, Emily, Stephanie and Matthew; and six great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and husbands, Harold Anderson and Bob Hustad.
Funeral: Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.
