During World War I a group of women from St. Mary's parish worked col lectively as volunteers sewing for the Red Cross. Following the close of the war, Teresa Brouillard (Anderson) approached Father Tiernan requesting that they be permitted to continue the group as the Ladies Guild of St. Mary's Church. Thus the guild was established and Teresa Brouillard was made President on May 3, 1920.

While the list of charter members is now in dispute, various reports include Mrs. Mary Wright, Miss Mary Hanrahan, Mrs. Anna Humphrey, Mrs. Winifred Crowe, Mrs. Julia Kennedy, Miss Sarah McMahon, Mrs. Julia Dillon, Mrs. Lillian Rourke, Mrs. Alice Hassett, Mrs. Mary Cowles, and Miss Rita Brouillard, Mrs. Fred Berkinshaw, Mrs. George Bauer and Mrs. John McMahon. The original ten (2) has grown to the present membership of 120.

In the early years the Guild would hold a bazaar each year that would last for three nights. One year a hope chest was filled with handmade articles and raffled off, raising $1,500. This unique way of raising money received much publicity and for a time the chest was on display in G. Fox's window in Hartford.

In 1963 St. Marys Junior League merged with the Ladies Guild bringing with them youthful enthusiasm and new talents.
Some of the projects under— taken by the Guild include renovation of the Church hall and kitchen, distribution of baskets of food to the needy and the establishment of a scholarship fund for high school graduates. The Ladies lend their talents to the preparation of baptismal robes that are presented to each baby who is received into the church in Baptism.
