Jane McNair Abernethy, 94, of Hickory, passed away peacefully, August 24, 2015 at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living, Clemmons NC.

Jane was born August 16, 1921 in Wilmington NC, to the late Charles Owen McNair and Mary Palmetto Gupton McNair. Jane was one of seven children. The family ran a dry goods mercantile store along Wilmington's Front Street but eventually moved inland along the Cape Fear River to the town of Tar Heel in Bladen County where they engaged in farming and also operated a nearby general store.

Jane graduated from Tar Heel School and then Flora McDonald College in Red Springs (now St. Andrews College in Laurinburg), where she roomed with cousin and lifetime friend Minnie Myers Canandy. Following graduation, Jane worked at the VA at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Leroy Franklin (Hank) Abernethy, Jr. of Hickory NC. Following their marriage on January 31, 1945, Hank was deployed with the 82nd Airborne to Germany and WWII. Upon return from the war, the couple began raising a family together, with stops in Asheville, Maiden and Charlotte before finally settling in her husband's hometown of Hickory.

Jane was a long time and faithful member of Corinth Reformed Church in Hickory. She and Hank ensured the church was a key part of their children's lives with expected regular participation in youth choir, youth fellowship, scouting and Sunday school. Jane was active with church circle and also supported the community with her service in the PTA, the Hickory Service League, Meals on Wheels, the March of Dimes and as a swim parent for the Hickory Seahorse swim team. Jane was an avid bridge player and looked forward to weekly bridge at LHCC with close friends Gerry Yount, BuMae Mitchell and Gray Briens. During her later years at Corinth Jane enjoyed carpooling with good friend Jane Hunsucker.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents C.O. and Pal; her sisters Mary, Annie, Tommie and Nell; brothers Charles and Billy; infant son James; and husband Hank.

She is survived by children David Abernethy and wife Judy of Concord, NC, Frank Abernethy and wife Becky of Winston-Salem, NC, Cindy Abernethy of Boone, NC, Tom Abernethy and wife Celeste of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren: Anna Douglas and husband Jason of Raleigh, NC, Ellie Abernethy of Knoxville, TN, Tracy Hahn and husband Chad of Huntersville, NC, Chris Abernethy of Kernersville, NC, Thomas Abernethy of Lebanon, OH, Tyler Abernethy of Winston-Salem, NC; great-grandchildren: Parker and Hayden Douglas of Raleigh, NC; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Corinth Reformed Church memorial gardens.
