Katherine P. Gary, a retired registered nurse and midwife, died of leukemia Nov. 3 at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Ruxton resident was 67.She was born and raised Katherine Patricia Meade in Crosshaven, County Cork, Ireland. She earned her nursing and midwifery degrees with honors from Saint Finbarr's Hospital School of Nursing in Cork.She began her nursing career in Ireland and in 1969 became a registered nurse at New Rochelle (N.Y.) Medical Center. In 1972, she moved to Baltimore when she became a critical care nurse at the former veterans hospital on Loch Raven Boulevard.Mrs. Gary left nursing in 1979 to become a homemaker and raise her two daughters.She was a longtime adviser and treasurer for the Maryland chapter of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. She also was an avid reader and enjoyed creative writing.Mrs. Gary was described by family members as being "open-minded, witty, friendly, lovely and beautiful - words that only begin to tell the story of who she was."She was a longtime communicant and Sunday school teacher at Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ Roman Catholic Church in Timonium.A memorial gathering was held yesterday in Towson.Surviving are her husband of 34 years, Dr. Nader G. Gary, an ophthalmologist; two daughters, Maryam Taraneh Nourbakhsa of Flemington, N.J., and Katherine J. Gary-Foley of Sparks; a brother and two sisters in Ireland; and a grandson.
