Charlotte Meade Kern, 86, of Clarke County, Virginia, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 5, 2012 in the Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center, Winchester, Virginia.

Mrs. Kern was born on August 2, 1925 in Clarke County, Virginia, the daughter of Everard Kidder and Margaret Della Wright Meade.

Active in the affairs of the Episcopal church, she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Winchester and later Christ Episcopal Church, Millwood; she served on the vestry of Christ Church, Winchester and was the first woman in the history of Christ Church to be elected Senior Warden; Mrs. Kern was also elected President of the Episcopal Church Women for the Diocese of Virginia and served on the Standing Committee of the Diocese; she was the Chair of the Altar Guild of Cunningham Chapel Parish and served as the Secretary for the Old Chapel Board.

Mrs. Kern was also very active in community affairs. She served as the Director of Volunteers for the Winchester Memorial Hospital on Cork Street; was a Forming Board Member of Blue Ridge Hospice; was Chair of the Board for Clarke County Help with Housing; served on the Board for F.I.S.H.; and was a member of the Winchester Century Club.

Mrs. Kern was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

A graduate of John Handley High School in Winchester, Class of 1943, she married Robert S. Kern on June 21, 1946 in Millwood, Virginia.

Surviving with her husband of 66 years are two sons, Robert Preston Kern and his wife Margarete of Berryville, Virginia and David Meade Kern and his wife Victoria, "Tori" of Charlotte, North Carolina; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Christ Church, Millwood, Virginia with Rev. Karin MacPhail officiating. A reception will be held at the church Parish House following the ceremony. Burial will be private.

Arrangements are being handled by Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, VA.
