Michael Mitton, Gentleman
c. 1600 - c. 1661
Maine Pioneer

Michael's Island, now Peaks Island
named for him in 1637.
Michael Mitton was constable of
the Casco Region in 1640.

He held Peaks Island through the
regimes of Sir Ferdinando Gorges,
George Cleeve (his father-in-law)
and Massachusetts.

In the third settlement of the area
after the French and Indian wars
Michael Mitton's descendants
the Brackett and Trott families
developed seven ninths of Peaks.

To honor his island connection on
the 360th anniversary of his first
deed of title, this memorial tablet
is placed by his descendants.
