June 2, 1924-March 18, 2009
Corbett resident Ardis Catherine Baker, 84, died Wednesday, March 18, at her home.
Ardis was born June 2, 1924, in Portland to Ernest and Magdaleine (Pulliam) Mershon. The family later moved to Corbett, where Ardis graduated from Columbian High School, now Corbett High School, in 1942.
On D-Day, June 6, 1944, she married James R. Baker in Richmond, Va.
The wartime marriage of the Bakers, part of a large clan in the community of Aims, was featured in a 1992 Gresham Outlook section on war marriages. The couple had first planned to wait until the war was over, but she began to fear that he would not come back from the U.S. Navy.
Because both were underage, they needed permission from their parents to wed. She boarded a train for a five-day ride to Richmond, where he was in training. They were married on an overnight pass and spent their one-night honeymoon in a small rented room that the landlady decorated with lilies of the valley. Ardis spent the remainder of the war in Oregon and her husband went to the battle of Okinawa. After his discharge from the Navy, they made their home on the family farm in Corbett, where they lived for more than 63 years.
Ardis was a homemaker and worked on the family farm. She was a member of Aims Community Church, Mt. Hood Snowmobile Club, Friends of Vista House, Corbett Alumni Association, Corbett Pioneer Association, Crown Point Country Historical Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 17, 2007; and by her grandson, Jeff Lucas, a U.S. Navy Seal who died in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.
Survivors include her daughters, Pat Lucas and Linda Traxler of Corbett; sister, Carol Quinn of Corbett; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Jeff Lucas Memorial Stadium Fund, 33305 E. Historic Columbia River Highway, Corbett, 97019.
