Alfred Allen Miller was born June 3,1921 in Sheridan, Wyoming. He was the only son of Clyde Miller and Lena Letitia (Ferree) Miller. Alfred's father, Clyde, was a WWl veteran, United States Army, Calvary division, stationed in France. After being honorably discharged with a medical discharge, "tuberculosis of the bone", he moved to Terre Haute, IN and married Lena Letitia Ferree in 1920. After God healed Clyde of his bone disease, they moved "West" and became share-croppers. Alfred was born shortly thereafter. He was named after his great grandfather, Alfred R. Miller.
Times were difficult for them, on the heels of the Great Depression, and the family tried various means of support, including farming, Clyde returning to school, studying animal husbandry, and once running a small General Store. Alfred began elementary school in Sheridan, WY. But because of difficult times, the family decided to return to Indiana to be closer to family and find steady work. Alfred's education was continued in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Alfred was an adventuresome person, always trying something new or different. Once he "hopped a freight train" to go back "out West", at age 12. He didn't like school and quit before his high school graduation. After trying various jobs, he became a limousine driver for a wealthy family, and that was his occupation when he met his future wife, Evelyn Rose Rea. They were married October 26,1939, in Rockville, IN, near her father's family. They lived in Terre Haute, IN, following their marriage. Eventually, Alfred and Evelyn had four children: Polly Lou, Peggy Marie, Alfred Allen,and Pamela Rose.
When WWll started, Alfred joined the US Navy SeaBees. He did duty in the Philippines. After an honorable discharge in 1945. Alfred had various occupations, in an attempt to support his growing family. He became a gasoline truck driver for DX Oil, later called Shell Oil Company. Next, he worked for the Newport Power Plant, as a mechanical engineer, in Newport, IN, followed by moving to Indianapolis, IN in the late 1950's, and working as a mechanical engineer for Ford Motor Company, in the power plant. He continued there until he retired from Ford Motor Company. In about 1977, following the death of his father, Clyde Miller, Alfred and Evelyn moved to "the farm" in rural E. Clay County (near Brazil, IN) to help care for Alfred's elderly mother, Lena. During this same time period, he also became a lay pastor at the church his father built in Terre Haute, IN. During his pastoring years, he also worked for a mining company near Cloverdale, IN, driving huge earth-moving machinery. After suffering a heart attack, and having by-pass surgery, he officially retired. Alfred's wife, Evelyn, died in 1988 of cervical cancer. This was a loss he never got over.
Alfred's personality was adventuresome and fearless. He was a dreamer. He also had a sensitive side, a love of beauty, especially the beauty of nature. He loved mountains and streams, flowers and trees, rivers and lakes and animals. He adored his beautiful wife, Evelyn. Alfred sought to be loved and accepted by people, but had difficulty in communicating his feelings. He enjoyed having fun, telling funny jokes, and going places, especially travelling to the mountains or the seashore. In 1975, Alfred and Evelyn took a tour of the Holy Lands, which included seeing Switzerland, Jordan, and Greece, as well as Israel. This was one of the highlights of his lifetime travels.
Between 1965 through the early 1980's, Alfred took several missionary trips. The first one was to visit a missionary in Columbia, South America. He went with five other ministers to Belize, Central America, to aid and encourage a missionary there. On one trip his wife, Evelyn, accompanied him to Belize. Another project he and several ministers accomplished, was to load a school bus with clothes, food, and equipment, and drive it to Mexico. It was donated to a missionary, including the bus. Alfred would have liked to have been a missionary himself.
During his lifetime, Alfred loved adventure of all kinds. He always dreamed of travelling, and one day returning to live "Out West", enjoying the mountains, and perhaps riding the open plains of Wyoming again, but it did not happen. Eventually Alfred sold "the farm" in rural Clay County, IN, auctioned off much of his personal effects, and moved to St. Francisville, IL, to be near his daughter Polly. He lived there about 3 years, travelling at times to Florida, to visit his daughter, Pam, or returning to Terre Haute to visit daughter Peggy, or son, Alfred Jr. After living alone, a widower for ten years, he died in 1998 of bone cancer. He went home to be with His Lord and Savior, and finally to live in a place of perpetual beauty and peace.
